First Impressions

‘First Impressions’ is a series of images that seek to represent the initial impression that the UK has on migrants entering the country. The inspiration for this project came whilst carrying out two previous projects focused on migration and the far right groups that oppose it; during these projects I began studying photographic techniques that I felt could represent the ingrained causes of racial tension and post colonial unrest present in modern British society. ‘First Impressions’ was shot whilst I retraced a series of journeys mapped out to me in a number of interviews conducted with migrant workers in and around the North West. As a result this project is not a representation of the migrant experience as a whole, but of the initial impression these migrants had of Britain. Accompanying the images are a series of poems created from the accounts of the interviewees.
