DAD MATTERS
DAD MATTERS is a collaborative photobook project with Salford young fathers. The aim of the project is to give young fathers the opportunity to develop skills in photography and to produce a visual record of their lives so far. Those involved are encouraged to share their experiences through images and words and to reflect on their role as fathers. Participants were tutored and mentored in basic photography and workshops focused on the medium as a means of communication. Participants were given small projects to complete based on themes of: possessions; identity; and emotion. These assignments were challenging and the equipment basic, yet participants have produced good quality, thought provoking pictures.
DAD MATTERS aims to challenge stereotypical attitudes towards young fathers perpetuated by mass media. I didn’t know what to expect when I began this project, popular opinion suggested that I would find thoughtless young males unwilling to accept their responsibilities. I discovered young fathers with warmth, humour and love. I applaud their sensitivity and commitment to their children, through sometimes difficult circumstances. Images and text capture their experiences, expectations and aspirations as young fathers.
